Quality Statement
Gas and Supply Specialty Gases strives to prepare the most accurate and consistent calibration standards available to
the energy industry. Our calibration standards have a gravimetric accuracy of ≤± 1% and are analytically verified in
addition to being N.I.S.T. traceable by weight.
Natural Gas and Natural Gas Liquid- Calibration Standard Specifications
Our natural gas and natural gas liquid calibration standards are prepared to a ≤± 1% gravimetric uncertainty @ 95%
confidence interval and are analytically verified in accordance of GPA publication 2198 and API 14.1. Analytical
verification methods are in accordance with GPA publications 2261, 2286, 2177 and or 2186. Gas and Supply Specialty
Gas standards are N.I.S.T. traceable by weight and are directly traceable to N.I.S.T. through an unbroken chain.
- GPA 2198: Preparation, Validation, Care and Storage of Natural Gas and Natural Gas Liquids Reference Standard Blends
- API Chapter 14 Natural Gas Fluids Measurement Section 1: Collecting and Handling of Natural Gas Samples for Custody Transfer.
- GPA 2261: Analysis for Natural Gas and Similar Gaseous Mixtures by Gas Chromatography.
- GPA 2286: Method for the Extended Analysis of Natural Gas and Similar Gaseous Mixtures by Temperature Programmed Gas Chromatography.
- GAP 2177: Analysis of Natural Gas Liquid Mixtures Containing Nitrogen and Carbon Dioxide by Gas Chromatography.
- GPA 2186: Method for the Extended Analysis of Hydrocarbon Liquid Mixtures Containing Nitrogen and Carbon Dioxide by Temperature Programmed Gas Chromatography.
- Gravimetric values are reported on the Certificate of Concentration as per GPA 2198 and API 14.1.
Balances and Masses
A provider of reference standards is only as good as their balances and masses. That is why Gas and Supply Specialty
Gases purchases only the highest quality balances and masses. Our balances are top of the line high load, high
sensitivity and low load, high sensitivity balances. We can accurately measure from ± 1 gram all the way down to ±
0.1 milligrams or ± 0.0001 grams.
No matter the quality of the balances, balance accuracy is dependent on the masses used to monitor each balance.
Gas and Supply Specialty Gases masses are ASTM E-613 Class 1 with NVLAP Certification (National Voluntary Laboratory
Accreditation Program) and directly traceable to the N.I.S.T. through an unbroken chain.
Physical Constants and Calculations
Use of proper physical constants is of utmost importance. At Gas and Supply Specialty Gases our physical constants
and calculations are from the latest versions of the following GPA and ASTM publications in the following order.
Physical Constants:
GPA 2145: Table of Physical Properties for Hydrocarbons and Other Compounds of Interest to the Natural Gas Industry
GPA Technical Publication 17: Table of Physical Properties of Hydrocarbons for Extended Analysis of Natural Gases.
GPSA Engineering Data Handbook Section 23-2: Physical Properties
Calculations:
GPA 2172/API Manual of Petroleum Measurement Standards Chapter 14.5: Calculation of Gross Heating Value, Relative Density,
Compressibility and Theoretical Hydrocarbon Liquid Content for Natural Gas Mixtures for Custody Transfer.
Hydrocarbon Dew Point Concerns
Hydrocarbon Dew point is defined in API Chapter 14 Section 1 as a temperature at a given pressure at which hydrocarbon
vapor condensation begins.
RefProp23 Gerg 2008 Software:
To assist our customers with hydrocarbon dew point concerns Gas and Supply Specialty Gases performs a hydrocarbon dew point
curve on many of the natural gas reference standards it prepares. Through the use of the ReProp23 Gerg 2008 equation of
state software the calculated hydrocarbon dew point can be determined. This information is one of the tools used in
determining the top pressure of your calibration standard.
What to do if your calibration standard has been or might have been exposed to temperatures below the hydrocarbon dew point:
If a natural gas calibration standard has been exposed or may have been exposed to temperatures below the hydrocarbon dew point,
don’t worry. This is easily remedied as long as the cylinder valve has not been opened. Per API Chapter 14 Natural Gas Fluids
Measurement Section 1 Collecting and Handling of Natural Gas Samples for Custody Transfer, as long as the cylinder valve has not
been opened the calibration standard can be heated to 30°F above the calculated hydrocarbon dew point for 4 hours after the skin
temperature of the cylinder reaches 30°F above the calculated hydrocarbon dew point. See API 14.1 for more specific information.
How to heat a cylinder:
GPA 2198 and API 14.1 provide guidance on how to heat a cylinder. These should be consulted before beginning this process. Gas
and Supply Specialty Gas can provide the cylinder heat blankets to meet your needs.
Hexanes Plus Fractions
Gas and Supply Specialty Gases has prepared several different hexanes plus fractions from which our clients to choose. Which
hexanes plus chosen is dependent upon your specific application. Each of our hexanes plus fractions is gravimetrically prepared
to our exacting standard of ≤± 1% gravimetric uncertainty, analytically verified and N.I.S.T traceable by weight.
Our premier hexane plus is named Hexanes Plus Extended and is designed for extended analysis. It contains xx components from
cyclopentane through the Decanes (C10s).
We also have a hexanes plus fraction named Hexanes Plus C6+ Backflush which is designed for C6+ backflush applications. This
contains 2, 2-diMethylbutane (neoHexane), n-Hexane (nC6), n-Heptane (nC7) and n-Octane (nC8). The 2, 2-dimethylbutane is
included to assist in timing your C6+ backflush.
For C7+ backflush applications we provide a hexanes plus fraction that is named Hexanes Plus C7+ Backflush that contains all
of the C6’s that elute through n-Hexane (C6’s), including 2,2-diMethylbutane, followed by n-Heptane (nC7), n-Octane (nC8), n-Nonane
(nC9) and n-Decane (nC10). The Hexanes Plus C7+ Backflush Fraction can also be used for Hexanes Plus C6+ Backflush applications.
Gas and Supply Specialty Gas has tried to anticipate your needs. If we don’t have what you want let us know. For more information
or a copy of each of these hexanes plus fractions please contact your Gas and Supply Specialty Gas representative or contact our
